The Beginning

The Local Herd cartoon strip debuted in the first issue of the Estes Park News on November 5, 2000.
A couple of weeks earlier, I heard that a new local newspaper was going to start up and I contacted the publishers, Gary and Kris Hazelton. I told them I wanted to do a cartoon strip. They were excited about the idea, but little did they know I had no clue what I was going to draw, but I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.
So I had two weeks to come up with a concept, characters and the first strip. I thought about resurrecting some of my old cartoon ideas but nothing was clicking. Then I thought to myself, "what if elk could talk - what would they say and what would they do".
CLICK!! The concept was born.
